Tigers Edged by Williams to Open Tournament

 

Lexington, Virginia - Trinity's women's tennis team opened the Fab Five Women's Tennis Tournament with a 5-4 loss to Williams College on Friday afternoon.

Trinity (7-5) is ranked 11th in the nation, while Williams is ranked third nationally.  The tournament features some of the top Division III women's tennis programs from around the country.

Williams clinched the match with a win at No. 5 singles when Allie Rottkamp defeated Trinity's Erin Jamison 6-1, 6-2, putting her team ahead 5-3 at the time.

The Tigers won two of the three doubles matches, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 positions.  Alicia Hunt and Laura Steinmetz teamed up at the top spot for an 8-6 win, while Jamison teamed with Katy Poettcker for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.  Heather Naeher and Cayleigh Simpson were beaten 8-2 at the third spot.

Hunt and Steinmetz also fell at the top two singles spots, with Steinmetz retiring after falling behind 5-0 in the first set.  Poettcker won 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Megan Jackson also won at No. 6 singles by scores of 6-0, 3-6, 10-4.  The Tigers secured just two of the six singles matches.

Trinity will face 25th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at noon on Saturday to continue the tournament.  The Tigers wrap up the weekend with a Sunday morning match with No. 4 Emory.
