The Trinity University Tigers men's and women's tennis teams won two
singles and two doubles finals Saturday at their Quad Meet on
Trinity’s courts.
Sophomore Andrew Hoing of
Steamboat Springs, Colo. (Steamboat Springs), won the men’s Flight 3
singles with a 6-7, 6-2, 10-4 victory over senior teammate Jose
Borges of Caracas, Venezuela. A tiebreak was played instead of a
third set.
Hoing and senior Crisanto
Ramirez of McAllen (Austin St. Stephen’s) took Flight 2 doubles,
beating Marcos Villarreal and Vitas Van Dijk of St. Mary’s 9-8. Pro
sets were played in the doubles competition. Flight 3 doubles was an
all Trinity final , with first year Bryan Leib of Dallas (Episcopal)
and sophomore Sam Pohl of Heidelberg, Germany (Heidelberg American
School), beating senior Jeremy Gold of College Station (A&M
Consolidated) and junior David Lesko of St. Louis (St. Louis
University) 9-7.
First-year Kassie Seger of
Austin (Bishop Kelly, in Boise, Idaho), was the winner of the
women’s singles Flight 4, defeating Karen Rodriguez of the
University of the Incarnate Word 7-6, 6-3.
The University of the
Incarnate Word captured two men’s and women’s singles flights each,
along with a women’s doubles final. Laredo Community College won two
men’s singles flights, one men’s doubles and one women’s singles and
doubles.
Trinity’s men will host the
Division III Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest
Regional Championships next Friday through Sunday, Sept. 28. Play
starts at 8 a.m. each day.
The Tiger women will compete
in the regional Oct. 3-5 at UT-Tyler. The winners and
runners-up at the regional tournaments advance to the ITA National
Small College Championships Oct. 16-19 at Mobile, Ala.
