SAN ANTONIO – Eight
members of the Trinity University Tigers women’s tennis team
advanced Friday to the round of 16 singles of the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association Southwest Region Championships.
The round of 16 (third
round) is slated for 8 a.m. and the quarterfinals at 11 a.m.
Saturday at the Tigers’ courts. The opening and second rounds were
completed Friday.
Tiger junior Katy
Poettcker, the No. 1 seed, faces 12th-seeded Morgan
Ranier of Hardin-Simmons. Junior Erin Jamison plays No. 7 Rachel
Houston of Texas-Dallas. First-year player Katie Budinsky takes on
sixth-seeded Megan Aarhus of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and sophomore Katie
Lawson meets Lauren Giovanini of Texas-Tyler. Fifth-seeded Thavindra
Ekanayake, a first-year player, is matched with sophomore Tiger
teammate Kassie Seger. Two other Trinity players will also meet, as
sophomore Katie Griffith and first-year Arianna Rose are scheduled
to play.
In doubles, three
Trinity teams have advanced to the quarterfinals, which will begin
at 2 p.m. The semifinals are slated for 4 p.m.
Lawson and Seger will
take on top seeds Lisa Mertz and Britanny Brazell of Hardin-Simmons.
Griffith and Jamison, seeded sixth, play the No. 3 team of Michelle
Hagler and Lauren Nielsen of Texas-Tyler. The second-seeded Tiger
team of Poettcker and Ekanayake take on No. 8 Houston and Meleah
Nassar of Texas-Dallas.
Sunday is the final day
of competition, which includes
consolation play. The main-draw singles and doubles champions will
advance to the ITA National Small College Championships Oct. 15-18
at Mobile, Ala.
