SAN
ANTONIO – Sunday's singles semifinals
of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Women’s
Southwest Region Championships will be an all Trinity affair at
Delavan Tennis Stadium.
Starting at
8 a.m., junior Katy Poettcker, the No. 1 seed, meets first-year
player Katie Budinsky, while fifth-seeded Thavindra Ekanayake, a
Tiger first-year, takes on sophomore Katie Griffith, seeded No. 2.
The
semifinal winners advance to the championship match at 10 or 10:30
a.m.
The No. 2
team of Poettcker and Ekanayake plays for the doubles championship
at noon, against top seeds Lisa Mertz and Britanny Brazell of
Hardin-Simmons.
Singles and
doubles champions will qualify for the ITA National Small College
Championships Oct. 15-18 at Mobile, Ala.
In
Saturday’s singles quarterfinals, Poettcker beat Tiger junior
teammate Erin Jamison 6-1, 6-1. Budinsky defeated No. 3 seed
Michelle Hagler of Texas-Tyler 6-2, 6-4. Ekanayake was a 6-1, 6-3
winner over Lauren Giovanini of UT-Tyler, and Griffith beat No. 8
Lauren Nielsen, also of UT-Tyler, 6-2, 6-3.
Poettcker
and Ekanayake defeated the fourth-seeded doubles team of Megan and
Mallory Aarhus of Mary Hardin-Baylor 8-4 in the semifinals. Mertz
and Brazell were 8-4 winners over the Tiger team of Griffith and
Jamison, the No. 6 seeds.
In the “B”
doubles final, UT-Tyler’s Morgan Wilkins and Summer Smith beat
Trinity junior Kim Filipowicz and first-year Emily Neale 8-5.
