Abilene, Texas -
Trinity's women's tennis team enjoyed a very successful weekend at
the ITA Southwest Regional Championships last weekend, winning both
the singles and doubles competition.
Trinity took nine singles
players and five doubles teams to compete against 10 other schools
for the chance to play at the ITA National Championships in Mobile,
Alabama from October 11-14.
The Tigers placed seven of
its nine singles players in the round of 16, then had six of a
possible eight competing in the quarterfinals. Sarah Chalos, a
senior walk-on, won her first three matches before losing to
teammate Laura Steinmetz in the quarterfinals. Steinmetz then
went on to the singles championship against teammate Alicia Hunt in
an all-Trinity final. Steinmetz had to default the singles
match, though, allowing Hunt to win the regional championship.
In doubles, Trinity placed
four of its five teams in the quarterfinals, and had both the # 1
and # 2 Trinity doubles teams advance to the finals.
First-years Katie Poettcker and Megan Fish, the # 2 doubles team for
the Tigers, lost to # 1 team Hunt and Steinmetz in the championship.
Hunt and Steinmetz, who were also in the singles final, defeated the
Hardin-Simmons doubles team of Tracy Henington and Brittany Brazell
- seeded second overall in this tournament.
Trinity sweeps the
competition, earning All-America honors for Hunt in singles and
Hunt/Steinmetz in doubles, and advancing to face the Pacific
Northwest Regional winners.
