San Antonio -
Trinity's women's tennis team, ranked 11th in Division III, won 6-3
over Birmingham-Southern College on Wednesday afternoon.
Trinity (7-4) snapped a
two-game losing streak with the win, which came on an historic day
for Tiger head coach Butch Newman. Newman secured his 300th
victory as the men's tennis head coach. He also has 284 wins
as the women's head coach, giving him nearly 600 wins combined.
The Tigers won one of three
doubles matches today, then took five of the six singles matches to
secure the victory.
Katy Poettcker and Erin
Jamison scored an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, then both players went
on to earn singles wins as well. Poettcker won 6-3, 6-2 at No.
3 singles, while Jamison took a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
Cayleigh Simpson clinched
the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. Also winning
in singles were Megan Fish (No. 2) and Megan Jackson (No. 6).
The Tigers will head to
Lexington, Virginia, for three matches against nationally-ranked
teams at Washington & Lee University this weekend. Trinity
takes on third-ranked Williams on Friday, followed by a match with
No. 25 Claremont on Saturday. The weekend concludes with a
Sunday match against fourth-ranked Emory.
