The second-seeded and 19th-ranked
Trinity
University Tigers women’s tennis team beat the host and
fourth-seeded University of the South-Sewanee 5-3 Saturday in the
NCAA Division III second round and advanced to Sunday’s regional
final.
Trinity (15-8) will take on top seed
and fourth-ranked Emory at noon Sunday. The winner advances to the
NCAA quarterfinals May 13 at St. Peter, Minn. Emory blanked the No.
3 seed and 15th-ranked Washington 5-0 in Saturday’s other
match.
The Tigers, who had a first-round bye,
took a 2-1 lead after doubles over the 20th-ranked
Sewanee Tigers, a fellow member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference. The clincher for Trinity, which beat Sewanee 5-4 in the
SCAC semifinals last month, was at No. 6 singles. First-year player
Megan Jackson of Katy, Texas (Cinco Ranch), defeated Derry Roberson
6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Trinity also captured Nos. 4 and 5 singles. The No. 3
singles match did not finish.
Alicia Hunt and Laura
Steinmetz, Trinity's No. 1 doubles team, improved to 13-3 in doubles
play this season, helping their team to the early lead. With
her match-clinching win at No. 6 singles, Megan Jackson also
improved to 13-2 in singles competition this year, leading the team
in wins. Erin Jamison won her 10th match of the year in
singles, while Megan Fish improved to 12-6 this season.
