The 20th-ranked Trinity
University women’s tennis team did not have a good start Friday
against the Hardin-Simmons University Cowgirls.
Hardin-Simmons, ranked No. 5 in the West Region, won two of three
doubles from the Tigers, ranked third regionally.
But Trinity
went on to win all six singles matches and won the dual match 7-2.
The Tigers, who have won five straight matches, improved to 8-6.
In doubles,
the Cowgirls Lisa Mertz and Brittany Brazell won the No. 1 slot over
Katy Poettcker and Katie Griffith. Jennifer Cheung and Diane Crouch
beat Kelsie Lawson and Kassie Seger at No. 2 doubles. Megan Jackson
and Melissa Weinnig of Trinity defeated Bria Camarillo and Danielle
Cochran at No. 3 doubles.
The only set
the Tigers dropped in singles was at No. 1, as Poettcker beat Mertz
2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Nos. 2-6 singles went to Griffith, Jackson,
Weinnig, Lawson and Seger, respectively, in straight sets.
Trinity, a
member of the NCAA Division III, will play at the University of the
Incarnate Word, in San Antonio, on Friday, April 17, at 3 p.m. UIW
is a member of the NCAA Division II.
