Trinity Women Blank Southwestern on Friday

 

San Antonio - The Tiger women, ranked No. 17 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (No. 3 in the West Region) shut out the Southwestern University Pirates (ranked No. 13 in the region) 9-0 Friday, in a match between two members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Trinity improved to 5-6 after the victory at Berry Creek Country Club. The Tigers’ matches with Colorado College and Austin College, scheduled for today and Saturday in Sherman, Texas, were canceled because of weather damage to Austin College’s courts. The coaches will attempt to reschedule the matches.

Tiger sophomores Katy Poettcker and Erin Jamison, ranked seventh in the West Region, won No. 1 doubles with an 8-1 victory over the Pirates Mary Pennington and Kelly Finn. First years Kelsie Lawson and Kassie Seger took No. 2 doubles, beating Charlotte Huskey and Sara Fitzsimmons 8-1. Senior Melissa Weinnig and sophomore Megan Jackson captured No. 3 doubles, with an 8-1 win over Lali Satyavada and Jessica Gaines.

Poettcker, ranked fourth regionally, beat Finn 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Griffith, who holds a No. 8 regional ranking, defeated Pennington 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Jamison won at No. 3, beating Gaines 6-2, 6-1, and Jackson took No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Huskey. Weinnig was victorious at No. 5 singles, beating Fitzsimmons 6-1, 6-1, and Seger won No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-3 over Satyavada.

The Tigers return home Friday, April 3, to host McMurry University at 3 p.m. at Delavan Tennis Stadium. UT-Tyler, ranked No. 8 in the region, comes to Trinity at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 4.
