Brownwood, Texas - The Trinity University Tigers opened their campaign with a split of a non-conference doubleheader Saturday with the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets at Don Shepard Park.
Howard Payne, which also opened its season, won the first game 4-3 and the Tigers took the second 16-3.
In the opener, the Tigers came back from a 4-1 deficit, scoring one run each in the fifth and sixth innings. The Tigers had two players on base in the ninth inning when the game ended, Trinity started off strong in the second game, scoring five runs in the first inning and two in the second, to take a 7-1 lead. A four-run sixth inning had the Tigers up 11-1.
First-year second baseman Ryan Cavan hit 4 for 4, cracked four RBIs in the second game, and scored three runs. Cavan went 5 for 8 on the day. Senior outfielder Johnny Baugus hit 3 for 4 and drove in two runs in the second half of the doubleheader. Sophomore pitcher Chuck Huggins (1-0) took the victory, allowing four hits, two walks, no earned runs and struck out six batters in five innings of work.
Trinity travels to Seguin Tuesday for a non-conference game with Texas Lutheran at 2 p.m.
