San Antonio - Trinity's baseball
team handed Rhodes College a 9-0 loss to open a four-game Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference series on Friday night at E.M. Stevens
Field.
Trinity (18-6, 7-2 SCAC) jumped out to an
early lead with a two-run first inning, then added four more in an
unusual fashion in the fourth inning. In that inning, all four
Tiger runs were scored via walks with the bases loaded, as Rhodes
pitchers walked six consecutive hitters.
Trinity finished off the scoring with a
three-run homer from J.B. Sowyrda in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Sowyrda finished the game 2-4 with one run and four RBI.
Tiger starter Adam Frey (2-2) evened his
record with a solid performance from the mound, pitching 6.2 innings
without allowing a hit to the Lynx. The no-hit bid was broken up
with a single through the left side of the infield, and Frey finished
his night allowing just the one hit and recording 10 strikeouts.
Evan Bronson pitched the final two innings to combine with Frey for the
shutout, allowing two hits in the final two innings, and striking out
two batters.
Nick Vera and Jordan Pennington each went
2-5 in the game, while Ryan Cavan scored three runs. Blake Holman
added two runs himself, and both he and Cavan drew three walks in the
game.
Adam Keckler collected two of the team's
three hits in the game for Rhodes, finishing 2-4 on the night.
The two teams play a doubleheader tomorrow
afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m., followed by a single series-ending
game at noon on Sunday.
