San Antonio - The Tiger baseball
team defeated Rhodes in both games of a doubleheader at E.M. Stevens
Field on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (20-6, 9-2) won 4-1 in the opener,
and then used an eight-run inning to propel them to a 14-3 win in the
finale. The win keeps the Tigers atop the SCAC standings, and also
clinches the season series with the Lynx.
The Tigers, who were the visitors in both
games today because they were makeup games, opened up the game with a
run in the top of the first, and then had a three-run third to take the
4-0 early lead. Rhodes hit a solo homer in the bottom of the
inning for the team's only run of the first game.
Ryan Poffenroth came on in relief early in
the opening game, with help from relievers Britton Horn and Jonathan
Scudder. Scudder earned the save by pitching a perfect final
inning, striking out two hitters.
Bobby Zabor was 2-3 with two RBI in the
first game, while Ryan Cavan scored two of the team's four runs.
In the second game, Trinity fell behind
early as Rhodes strung together a couple of hits and stolen bases to
take the lead after one inning. The Tigers answered with a
four-run second and another run in the third to make it 5-1, but the
Lynx took advantage of three errors to score twice more and cut the lead
in half.
In the fourth, though, Trinity put the game
out of reach with an eight-run frame in which all but one of Trinity's
offensive players scored. The inning also featured two Tiger
homers, including a grand slam off the bat of Ryan Cavan - his first of
the season and his career.
Cavan finished the day 1-3 with five RBI,
while J.B. Sowyrda was 2-3 with three RBI and one run scored.
Sowyrda hit the team's other homer in the fourth - a two-run shot to
left-centerfield.
Nick Vera was 2-2 with four runs scored in
the game, while Will Becker was 2-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Becker nearly made it three homers in the productive fourth for Trinity,
hitting a double off the very top of the fence in the left-center gap.
Drew Bignall gave up three runs - one
earned - on three hits through six innings, striking out eight Rhodes
batters. Tom Dailey finished off the game for the Tigers, striking
out two and allowing one hit in the final inning.
Trinity and Rhodes will conclude their
weekend series with a single game tomorrow afternoon. The Tigers
will also host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday night,
with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
