San Antonio - Trinity's baseball
team missed a chance at a four-game SCAC weekend series sweep of Rhodes
College on Sunday afternoon, losing 6-8 in the series finale.
Trinity (20-7, 9-3) led 4-0 early, but
Rhodes cut it to a two-run advantage after the third, and then added
another run in the sixth to make it 4-3.
In the eighth, Rhodes cracked five hits to
score four runs and take its first lead of the game 7-4, but the Tigers
answered with a two-run eighth to cut the lead back to one. The
Lynx added an insurance run in the ninth, but they turned out not to
need it as Trinity went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
Chuck Huggins gave up just one earned run -
three total - and five hits through seven innings, but relievers gave up
six hits and five earned runs in the final two innings.
Nick Vera was 3-4 with one RBI and two runs
scored, while Blake Holman was 2-4 with one RBI.
Matt Beesley had three hits for Rhodes, and
three other players had two hits each - including Adam Keckler, who hit
the only homer of the game - a solo shot in the sixth inning. Paul
Schneider (3-0) went the distance for the Lynx, giving up six runs -
four earned - on eight hits and striking out five batters.
Trinity will remain at home for another
game next week, facing off against Mary Hardin-Baylor Tuesday night at
7:00 p.m. The Tigers, who have played 23 of their last 24 games at
home, will head to Millsaps for a pair of SCAC games in Jackson,
Mississippi next weekend.
