San Antonio - Trinity's baseball
team defeated Southwestern University 10-4 to open a two-game Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (12-6, 5-2 SCAC) jumped out to an
early lead with a two-run homer from Blake Holman in the bottom of the
first inning, but Southwestern took the lead with three total runs in
the second and third innings. Holman then hit a three-run homer in
the third inning to spark a five-run inning that gave the Tigers the
lead for good.
The Pirates added run in the fourth, but
Trinity's three-run fifth finished off the day's scoring. The
Tigers totaled 10 hits in the game, holding Southwestern to just five.
Brian Oates (4-0) got the win for the
Tigers, striking out three hitters and giving up just four hits through
five innings. Evan Bronson recorded a rare four-inning save - his
first of the year - allowing one hit and fanning five.
Holman finished 3-4 with five RBI and two
runs scored to lead the Trinity offensive attack. Will Becker and
Nick Vera both had two-hit games, as did Bobby Zabor. Becker
scored a pair of runs, while Vera stole three bases in the game.
Ryan Cavan was 1-1 with two runs scored, drawing three walks.
Southwestern designated hitter Derek Berger
drove in two runs - both on sacrifice flies - while Brad Culling scored
two runs and finished 1-3 on the day.
Trinity and Southwestern will conclude this
weekend's series with a single game tomorrow afternoon.
