Georgetown, Texas - The Tiger
baseball team defeated Southwestern University 7-4 to open a conference
doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Trinity (28-9, 15-4) improves
to 4-0 against the Pirates this year. Southwestern struck first
with a run in the opening inning, but the Tigers answered with
back-to-back homers from Bobby Zabor and J.B. Sowyrda to lead off the
inning and take a 2-1 lead.
The Pirates reclaimed the lead with two
more runs in the bottom of the second, which was followed by another
two-run inning for Trinity that gave the visitors a 4-3 lead. The
Tigers added one run in each of the final three innings, and
Southwestern managed another run in the sixth for the final score.
Zabor finished 4-4 with three runs scored
in the game, while Blake Holman was 2-4 with two runs scored. Nick
Vera drove in a pair of runs on a third-inning single, and also stole
two bases to increase his team-leading total to 30 steals this year.
Chuck Huggins (6-1) earned the win,
allowing four runs on four hits through five innings, striking out five
batters in the game. Britton Horn earned the save, allowing no
runs on two hits in the final two innings.
Game two will be played later this
afternoon and will be the conference finale for the Tigers.
Currently, Trinity leads the SCAC standings with a 15-4 mark in division
play.
