San Antonio - Trinity's baseball
team used an eight-run inning to secure a 16-2 victory over University
of Wisconsin-Stout on Monday night at E.M. Stevens Field.
Trinity (11-5) scored three runs in both
the first and second innings, but really busted the game open with an
eight-run fifth inning to go ahead 14-1.
Ryan Hopkins (1-1) allowed two runs on five
hits through 5.2 innings to earn the win, striking out six hitters in
his first start of the 2006 season. Relievers John Allen and
Britton Horn allowed just one hit over the final 3.1 innings.
The Tiger offense hammered out 20 hits
against the Blue Devils, including three players with three hits in the
game. Ryan Cavan, Bobby Zabor, and Will Becker all had three
singles in the game to lead the team. Cavan was 3-3 with one RBI
and three runs scored, while Becker and Zabor were both 2-4 with two
runs and two RBI.
Johnny Baugus hit his fourth home run of
the year, and finished 2-4 with two RBI. Blake Holman had two hits
and two runs scored, while J.B. Sowyrda and Andreas Verrios knocked in
two runs each.
Ricky Welch came off the bench to crack two
doubles in two trips to the plate, driving in a pair of runs. Nick
Vera finished 2-4 with one run and one RBI.
Trinity will travel to Austin, Texas
tomorrow to take on Concordia (TX) University. The Tigers return
home for a two-game SCAC series over the weekend, taking on Southwestern
on Saturday and Sunday. Both games will begin at 1:00 p.m.
