San Antonio -
Trinity's baseball team opened a Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference weekend series with a 7-6 loss to Austin College on
Thursday night at E.M. Stevens Field.
Trinity (14-16, 5-4) opened up the game's scoring with three runs in the
second, but Austin College bounced back with four runs in the very next
inning. The Tigers were able to erase that lead in the fourth,
though, scoring once after a leadoff walk in the inning.
The Kangaroos scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh
though, reclaiming the lead and seeming to take full control of this
conference matchup. In the seventh, Trinity loaded the bases with
nobody out, ending up with two runs in the inning to make it a 7-6 game
with two to play. The Tigers put two men on with two outs in the
ninth, but they were unable to score the tying run.
Bobby Zabor was 3-5 with one run and three RBI, while Blake Holman also
finished with three hits for the Tigers. Teddy Wilson added a pair
of hits, while Evan Jones drew three walks and scored two runs.
Britton Horn (2-2) was charged with the loss after yielding six runs on
nine hits through 5.1 innings. He did record seven strikeouts,
though he also allowed five walks. Chris Walden allowed one
unearned run through 2.2 innings, and Ryan Poffenroth struck out two in
the final inning to keep Trinity in striking distance in the ninth.
Clint Rushing (5-3) allowed six runs on 12 hits in the complete-game
victory for Austin College, though all but one of the hits by the Tigers
were singles. Patrick Ray and Matt Aurand each had two hits and
two RBI for the 'Roos.
Trinity and Austin College will continue the weekend series with a
doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. On Saturday, the
teams finish off the series with a single game at noon.
