San Antonio -
Trinity's baseball team opened up a Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with a 6-0 shutout win over
Hendrix College on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (8-9, 2-0) scored in four of its six innings on offense, with
the opening game being scheduled for seven innings. The Tigers
opened the scoring with a run in the first, followed by a three-run
third inning. Trinity added single runs in the fourth and fifth to
finish the scoring.
Drew Bignall (2-1) earned the win for Trinity, pitching a three-hit
shutout and striking out nine batters to tie his career high.
Bignall went 5.1 innings without allowing a hit, and allowed just one
hit through the first six innings before Hendrix was able to put
together a pair of singles in the seventh.
Nick Vera was 3-4 with one run and one RBI in the game, cracking two
doubles and three triples for the Tigers. He also recorded his
ninth stolen base of the season.
Bobby Zabor was 1-3 with three runs scored and one RBI, knocking a solo
homer off of the foul pole in left field in the fourth inning.
Jordan Pennington had a double and one run scored as well.
Hendrix's Nathan Hill broke up Bignall's no-hit bid in the sixth,
smacking a single up the middle past a diving shortstop.
Pinch-hitter Erik Grafton and nine-hole hitter Matt Gaglio also had hits
in the game. Trinity scored four earned runs on 10 hits against
Daniel Ward (1-2), who also went the distance for Hendrix.
The two teams conclude the doubleheader this afternoon, followed by a
single game tomorrow to cap a four-game weekend series of SCAC action.
