San Antonio -
Trinity's baseball team earned a four-game weekend
sweep in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, defeating Hendrix
College 8-6 on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity (10-9, 4-0) won 9-2 in the opening game on Friday, then swept
both games of yesterday's St. Patrick's Day doubleheader. The
Tigers had a 6-0 shutout win in the opener, followed by a 5-4 win to
finish off Saturday's action.
The Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings in this game,
highlighted by a five-run first inning that featured three doubles.
Hendrix was finally able to get on the board in the third, taking
advantage of a two-out error that led to a three-run homer by the next
batter.
Trinity was able to get one of those runs back to take a 7-3 lead, which
stood until the sixth inning when the Warriors added two more runs to
cut the lead in half. Trinity again responded with another run,
but Hendrix got it right back in the seventh to make it 8-6.
In
that seventh inning, Hendrix had a chance for more with two runners on
and just one out. The Tigers induced a ground ball for a fielder's
choice, then reliever Ryan Poffenroth came on to record a strikeout and
close out the inning.
Poffenroth allowed just one hit over the final 2.1 innings of the game,
earning his first save of the season. Britton Horn (1-1) earned
the victory, giving up six runs on eight hits through 6.1 innings,
though just three of those runs were earned.
Bobby Zabor and Nick Vera both contributed three hits to the offensive
attack for the Tigers in this game, accounting for six of the team's 14
hits. Both players also scored one run, while Vera had two RBI and
two stolen bases.
Blake Holman and Jordan Pennington both collected two doubles and a run
scored in the game, while Holman knocked in two runs with his first
double. Jeremy Bays also had two hits for the Tigers, scoring
three runs and driving in another.
David Foley was 3-4 with two runs and three RBI for Hendrix, and it was
his three-run homer in the third that got the Warriors offense on track
in this game. Three other players also had multi-hit games, and
Hendrix totaled 11 hits in the game - leaving 11 runners on base today.
David Hagan (3-1) was charged with the loss, giving up eight runs on 14
hits, but only one run after the first three innings of the game.
Trinity now stands atop the SCAC standings with the 4-0 start to the
conference season, with Millsaps and Austin splitting four games in
Jackson, Mississippi this weekend. The Tigers will continue this
homestand with a game tomorrow night against Cardinal Stritch University
at 7:00 p.m.
