Jackson, Mississippi -
Trinity's baseball team opened
up a four-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series
with a 12-6 loss at Millsaps College on Friday night.
Trinity (13-11, 4-1) lost for the first time in SCAC play this season,
having swept Hendrix College in a four-game series at home earlier this
month.
The Tigers struck first with a run to start the game, but Millsaps had a
two-run bottom of the first to take the lead. Trinity answered
with a three-run homer in the second to pull ahead 4-2 and held a
one-run lead after Millsaps managed another run in the bottom of the
inning.
The Majors then posted a three-run inning of their own to pull ahead
6-4, but solo homers by Nick Vera in the fifth and eighth innings tied
the game at 6-6 heading into the final nine outs of the game.
Vera's game-tying homer led off the eighth inning.
It
also marked the first multi-homer game for a Trinity player this season,
and for Vera, it was the second time in as many seasons that he had a
two-homer game against Millsaps. Vera finished 2-5 in the game.
Millsaps answered Vera's homer with a six-run eighth inning that blew
the game wide open and put the home team in full control of the game.
Zach Fregosi hit the three-run home run for the Tigers in the second -
the first homer of his career with the Tigers. Fregosi finished
1-2 and also reached on a walk.
Britton Horn threw the first three innings for the Tigers, giving up six
runs (five earned) on seven hits, but did not factor in the decision.
Ryan Poffenroth (4-4) was charged with the loss after giving up six runs
on five hits over the final five innings, though just one of those runs
was earned.
The two teams will continue the weekend series with a doubleheader
tomorrow afternoon. The first game was moved up to noon to attempt
to avoid the predicted rains in the afternoon in Jackson. One game
is scheduled for seven innings, while the other will be a regular
nine-inning contest. The series concludes with a noon game on
Sunday.
