San Antonio -
Trinity's baseball team snapped a six-game losing
streak with an 8-2 win over Schreiner University on Tuesday night at E.M.
Stevens Field.
Trinity (15-18) returned home in dramatic fashion in the middle of last
month, winning seven consecutive games. Since then, the Tigers
were just 2-9 over the past few weeks; however, the team seemed to get
out of its funk in the game tonight.
Trinity scored twice in both the first and third innings to take a 4-0
lead early in the game, and after Schreiner cut the lead in half with
two seventh-inning runs, the Tigers answered with four runs in the next
two innings to take full control of the contest.
The offense hammered out 12 hits in the game, including four extra-base
hits. The pitching staff held Schreiner to just six hits, and the
defense had an incredibly strange night. The Tigers had three
double plays against the Mountaineers, picked off three runners, and had
two outfield assists (one on a double play).
Zach Bukowski (1-1) gave up just two unearned runs on five hits through
six innings, striking out four batters. Ryan Hopkins earned the
save with two innings to close out the game, walking two batters without
allowing a hit or a run.
Bobby Zabor led the team with three hits in four at-bats, while Nick
Vera was 2-3 in the game. Both players scored two runs and also
drew one walk each. Jordan Pennington also had two hits and a pair
of walks, scoring once and driving in another run.
Zach Fregosi added two hits, while Blake Holman and Bobby Zabor drove in
two runs each.
Trinity will return to action this weekend at Southwestern University
for a four-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series in
Georgetown, Texas.
