Georgetown, Texas - Trinity's
baseball team managed a Saturday afternoon split in a Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Southwestern
University, winning 8-3 in the second game.
Trinity (16-20, 6-8) pounded out 11 hits in
the second game, nearly equaling the team's total in the first two games
of the weekend series. The Tigers also took advantage of five
walks allowed by Southwestern pitching, as well as four errors by the
home team.
Another huge change in this game was the
fact that it was Trinity - not Southwestern - that jumped out to an
early lead. In the first two games of this series, the Pirates
enjoyed multi-run performances in the first inning. The Tigers
earned the win by taking a 5-0 lead in the first two frames for the
visitors - including three runs in the first.
Southwestern answered back with two runs in
the bottom of the second, as well as answering a Trinity fifth-inning
run with another run of its own; however, the Tigers put the game away
with two insurance runs in the ninth to reach the final total.
Britton Horn (3-2) gave up three runs on
six hits through five innings, earning the first win of the series for
Trinity. Horn did allow five walks, though three of those came in
the first two innings.
Four Tiger hitters finished with multi-hit
games, which included two hits and two runs to go with one RBI for Ricky
Welch. He also had one of the team's two extra-base hits in the
game, getting the team off to a great start with an RBI double as the
second batter of the game.
Blake Holman finished 2-3 with one run and
one RBI, while Bobby Zabor and Andreas Verrios also had two hits each.
Zabor also scored twice, while Verrios drove in a pair of runs.
Holman also drew two walks to reach base in all five of his plate
appearances.
Trinity and Southwestern complete the
weekend series with a single game tomorrow afternoon. The Tigers
need to win to split the series.
