Georgetown, Texas - Trinity's
baseball team not only rallied to win the final two games of this
weekend's SCAC series at Southwestern University, but overcame today's
6-1 deficit to earn a 10-7 victory.
Trinity (17-20, 7-8) was shut out 7-0 in
Friday's series opener, then lost 7-2 to start a Saturday doubleheader.
The Tigers then rallied with an 8-3 win to split the doubleheader, and
then won today's game to split the overall series.
The Tigers had a rough start to this game,
allowing four runs in the first inning and then two more in the second.
Trinity did manage one run in those innings to keep from being blanked
to start things off. Beginning in the fourth, Trinity started
slowly chipping away at the lead - scoring once in the fourth and fifth,
then twice in the sixth.
In the seventh, trailing 6-5, the Tigers
exploded with a four-run inning of its own to take a 9-6 lead, adding
another run in the eighth for insurance. The Pirates scored a run
in the bottom of the ninth as Trinity traded a run for a double play
defensively.
Eric Samulski led the Tigers with a
career-best performance on Sunday, as the senior was 3-4 with three RBI,
a double, and one run scored. Samulski's two-run single in the
seventh turned out to be the difference in the game, as he put Trinity
up by three runs.
Blake Holman also stood out offensively
with three hits and three runs to go with two RBI - also knocking in two
runs in the decisive seventh inning. Two of Holman's hits were
doubles, giving him three extra-base hits in the last two games.
Teddy Wilson and Nick Vera also cracked a pair of hits each, and Andreas
Verrios had two stolen bases and two runs scored.
Ryan Poffenroth (5-5) came on late in the
game to earn the win, pitching the final 4.1 innings and allowing one
run on one hit. Clint Robertson also pitched well in relief,
giving up three hits in 2.2 innings in the middle of the game without
allowing a run.
Trinity will host Texas Lutheran University
in the regular season finale on Tuesday night at E.M. Stevens Field.
The Tigers have also qualified for next weekend's SCAC Divisional
Playoffs, facing the East Division top seed in Rhodes College. The
two teams will play a three-game series next weekend, with the winner
advancing to the SCAC Championships at Southwestern.
