Richardson, Texas - The Tiger
baseball team was unable to complete a season-opening doubleheader sweep
at UT-Dallas on Saturday, as the home team took the 14-8 win in game
two.
Trinity (1-1) scored 16 runs in two
consecutive innings on Saturday, combing a 13-run seventh in the opening
game, and a three-run first in the finale. UT-Dallas didn't flinch
in the second game, though, answering three Tiger runs with five runs of
its own to take a 5-2 lead after one.
The Comets then added another run in the
second to take a familiar 6-3 advantage. After single runs in the
third and fourth by the Tigers, UT-Dallas answered with two big innings
to take a 13-5 lead after six.
Trinity made a bid at another dramatic
final-inning comeback, but the Comets stopped the run-scoring at three
in the ninth to earn the split.
Bobby Zabor was 2-5 with two RBI in the
second game, bringing his day's total to five hits, while Nick Vera was
1-3 with three runs scored - giving him seven runs in two games.
Vera also stole a pair of bases.
Andreas Verrios was 2-4 with two runs
scored, while Steven Ramos came off the bench with a 2-3 performance.
Sophomore Evan Bronson (0-1) struggled in
his first career start, giving up six runs on six hits through three
innings. Bronson struck out three, but walked five of the 20
batters he faced.
Reliever Ryan Poffenroth was also hurt by
the hot bats of the Comets, allowing seven runs on eight hits, though he
did record five strikeouts to tie his career-best total.
Trinity and UT-Dallas complete the
three-game weekend series with a single game tomorrow afternoon.
The Tigers return for the team's home opener on Tuesday against
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7:00 p.m.
