Trinity Beats Whitworth Again in Tournament Semifinal

Peoria, Arizona - The Tiger baseball team scored a 3-1 win over Whitworth (WA) College in the Semifinals of the Desert Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Trinity (4-4) snapped its two-game losing streak with the loss, propelling the Tigers into tonight's tournament championship against Washington & Lee.  Washington & Lee defeated Trinity 6-5 yesterday.

The Tigers opened the scoring on an RBI single in the top of the second inning, but Whitworth tied the game with its own RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

After an RBI triple to open the eighth, Trinity had a pinch-hit RBI single to break the tie. An RBI double in the ninth gave the Tigers an insurance run to ensure the win.

Steven Ramos had his fourth straight multi-hit game with a 2-3 performance at the plate.  Nick Vera and Andreas Verrios finished with two hits each, while Bobby Zabor scored two of the team's three runs.

Three Tiger pitchers held Whitworth to one run on three hits in the game, led by five innings of two-hit baseball by starter Michael Hunter.  Hunter allowed no runs through five innings, striking out seven Pirate hitters.  Zach Bukowski and Ryan Poffenroth finished off the game, with Poffenroth seven of the eight batters he faced at the end of the game.
