Peoria, Arizona - The Tiger baseball
team defeated Washington & Lee University 13-7 to win the Desert Classic
Tournament Championship on Saturday night at the Peoria Complex.
Trinity (5-4) opened the scoring with a
three-run second inning, but W&L responded with its own three-run inning
in the top of the third. The Generals then took a 4-3 lead with a
run in the sixth, but the Tigers responded with nine runs in the next
two innings to take command of the game.
Washington & Lee was able to plate three
more runs in the eighth, but it would not be enough to beat a determined
Tiger team that hammered out 15 hits in the game.
Ryan Hopkins (1-0) allowed just one earned
run (six runs overall) on eight hits through 7.1 innings, striking out
four and allowing four walks.
Bobby Zabor pounded out three hits and
recorded four RBI and Ted Wilson was 4-5 with three runs scored to lead
the Tigers to victory.
Steven Ramos was 2-3 with two runs and two
stolen bases, while Blake Holman also had a pair of hits - including one
of four Tiger doubles. Richie Smith finished 2-4 with three RBI
and one run scored.
Terrence McKelvey was 3-5 for Washington &
Lee, and Chris Sherman (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up
three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings.
Trinity will travel to Texas Lutheran on
Tuesday to continue the team's long road trip. The Tigers do not
return home until March 14 against Concordia (NE) University.
