Trinity Defeats Howard Payne in Regular Season Finale

San Antonio - The Tiger baseball team defeated Howard Payne University 14-8 in the regular season finale at E.M. Stevens Field on Tuesday night.

Trinity (27-12) jumped out to an early lead but needed a late-inning rally to pull off the victory.  Both teams tallied 12 hits in the game, and there were 17 total walks issued by pitchers from both teams.

The Tigers scored five times in the first inning to pull ahead early, then answered a two-run third with a single run to make it 6-2 through three innings. 

Howard Payne scored once in the fifth and then three times in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6, but the Tigers posted a six-run sixth inning to take the lead for good.

Clint Robertson (4-0) earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out one batter.  Trinity starter Britton Horn struck out five in the first 4.2 innings of the game, reaching 100 career strikeouts in the process. 

Steven Ramos collected three hits to lead the Tiger offense, but it was Tom Carberry's eighth-inning home run that really highlighted the day for Trinity. 

Carberry drove in the final two runs of the game for Trinity with his homer to left, which was also the first of his career with the Tigers. 

Dylan Early also extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 2-3 performance, driving in two runs.  Kyle Felix finished with two runs and two RBI, while Stosh Hoover joined both Evan Jones and John Paillet in scoring twice in the game.

Jones drew a walk in the first inning for his 60th RBI of the season, making him the third player in school history to drive in 60 or more runs in one year.

Trinity will face Oglethorpe University in a best-of-three weekend series at the SCAC Divisional Playoffs, starting on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
