San Antonio - Trinity's baseball
team opened a three-game weekend series with Rutgers-Newarkwith an 11-1
win at E.M. Stevens Field on Friday night.
Trinity (2-3) scored twice in the first
inning and once more in the second to jump ahead early on, then put the
game out of reach with a five-run sixth inning that made it a 9-0 lead.
Tiger starter Evan Bronson (2-0) turned in
a dominating performance on the night, striking out a career-high 14
batters in seven innings on the mound, and giving up no runs on just one
hit. Bronson struck out each of the first six batters he faced,
and a third-inning single was all that Rutgers-Newark could manage
against him.
Jeff Claydon led the Tiger offense,
collecting a career-high three hits and driving in a career-best four
runs. He also hit his second homer of the year - and his career -
in the five-run sixth inning.
Evan Jones also had a pair of extra-base
hits in three at-bats, scoring twice and securing three RBI. Jones
hit the first double and triple of his career in the game. Kyle
Felix also scored a pair of runs for the Tigers.
Kevin Calbick and Mike Hunter each pitched
one inning of relief in the game, striking out four batters and giving
up a run on two hits in the final two innings.
Trinity and Rutgers-Newark continue the
series tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. The series finale will be
Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
