Tigers Open Weekend Series With Lopsided Win

San Antonio - Trinity's baseball team opened a three-game weekend series with Rutgers-Newarkwith an 11-1 win at E.M. Stevens Field on Friday night.

Trinity (2-3) scored twice in the first inning and once more in the second to jump ahead early on, then put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth inning that made it a 9-0 lead.

Tiger starter Evan Bronson (2-0) turned in a dominating performance on the night, striking out a career-high 14 batters in seven innings on the mound, and giving up no runs on just one hit.  Bronson struck out each of the first six batters he faced, and a third-inning single was all that Rutgers-Newark could manage against him.

Jeff Claydon led the Tiger offense, collecting a career-high three hits and driving in a career-best four runs.  He also hit his second homer of the year - and his career - in the five-run sixth inning.

Evan Jones also had a pair of extra-base hits in three at-bats, scoring twice and securing three RBI.  Jones hit the first double and triple of his career in the game.  Kyle Felix also scored a pair of runs for the Tigers.

Kevin Calbick and Mike Hunter each pitched one inning of relief in the game, striking out four batters and giving up a run on two hits in the final two innings.

Trinity and Rutgers-Newark continue the series tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.  The series finale will be Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
