San Antonio - The Tiger baseball
team was able to erase a four-run deficit to come from behind and win
10-7 in game two of a Friday afternoon doubleheader against Southwestern
University.
Trinity (16-8, 5-2) won 2-0 earlier in the
day behind a four-hit shutout from Evan Bronson. The Tigers
actually led 3-1 after the first inning of this one, scoring three runs
on three hits in the opening frame.
Southwestern, though, was able to tie it in
the next half-inning, scoring with a pair of doubles and a wild pitch in
the inning. The visitors then took a 4-3 lead by scoring on
another wild pitch in the third, and pulled ahead by another run with a
leadoff homer in the fifth.
In the seventh, Trinity had still not been
able to cut into the lead when Southwestern seemed to take full control
with two more runs on three hits, pushing the lead to 7-3. With
the game slipping away, the Tigers were finally able to something
together in the bottom of the seventh.
After a leadoff single and a walk, Evan
Jones doubled home a run to make it 7-4 and a wild pitch cut the lead to
just two. After another walk, an RBI groundout scored another run
to make it 7-6. Eventually, Steven Ramos came up with two on and
two out, delivering a game-tying RBI single to right-center.
Ramos then made a nice catch up against the
backstop for the third out of the eighth, setting up Trinity's three-run
eighth that gave them the lead. Jones doubled home another run,
and both Jordan Pennington and Jeff Claydon also drove in runs.
That would be all Tiger reliever John Prato Matthews would need,
finishing off his second inning of work to earn the win.
Prato Matthews (2-0) didn't allow a hit in
the final two innings, walking two and striking out two more for the
Tigers. Brian Oates threw five innings at the start, giving up
five runs - four of which were earned - on seven hits and recording
seven strikeouts.
Jones finished 3-5 with three RBI and two
runs scored for the Tigers, while Stosh Hoover and Dominick Robusto both
scored three times. Robusto also had two hits and three stolen
bases for the Tigers. Catchers Zach Fregosi and Steven Ramos - who
came on in the sixth inning - both went 2-2 in the game.
Trinity and Southwestern will conclude the
four-game series tomorrow at noon. The Tigers can win their second
SCAC series of the year and remain in first place in the SCAC West
Division standings with a win.
