Abilene, Texas - Trinity's baseball
team opened its part of the NCAA West Regional Tournament with an 8-1
win over George Fox University on Wednesday afternoon at Walt Driggers
Field.
Trinity (33-13) was led by a dominating
outing by left-handed starter Evan Bronson, as well as a multi-homer
game from first-year Dylan Early.
Bronson struck out 10 in a complete-game
victory, giving up just one run on six hits for the Tigers.
Bronson walked just one, and became just the sixth player in Trinity
history to strikeout 100 or more batters in a season. The junior
lefty now has 102 strikeouts on the year, which is fourth in single
season history.
Early went 2-3 with two runs and four RBI,
cracking the first two home runs of his collegiate career. Early
hit a two-run shot in the second to make it 4-0 Trinity, then ripped
another two-run round-tripper in the eighth inning.
Trinity opened the game with a run in the
first, then added three in the second after Early's first dinger.
George Fox scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth, but a Tiger
double play cut short any further rally. Early's second homer made
it 6-1, then Trinity added two more insurance runs in the ninth to
finish the scoring.
Jeff Claydon went 3-4 for the Tigers, while
Jordan Pennington was 2-4 with a double. Both Claydon and
Pennington had one run and one RBI in the game, while Stosh Hoover added
two runs.
Kyle Felix was 2-3 with two runs and one
RBI, reaching base four times total for Trinity. Evan Jones also
had two hits, and is still hitting over .400 this season.
Trinity will take on the winner of
tonight's final game of the opening day, which will be either hosting
McMurry University or Cal State-East Bay.
