San Antonio - Former
Tiger baseball standout Nick Vera opened his professional career with a
bang on Thursday, going 4-4 with two doubles in his first game with the
Johnson City Cardinals.
Vera, who was drafted by the
Cardinals organization on June 7, also scored two runs and drove in two
more to lead the Cardinals to victory in the season opener.
In the second game of the
doubleheader, Vera was 1-3 with another double and and run scored in a
Johnson City loss, and leads the team in hitting.
This past season for Trinity,
Vera was the team's top player in nearly every offensive category, and
played a near-flawless center field. He was named 1st Team All-SCAC
and 1st Team All-West Region for his stellar season.
Vera joins Jason Armstrong and
J.C. Bunch - now a Tiger assistant coach - as recent graduates to play
professionally as position players. Adam Frey, currently pitching
in the United League Baseball, led the Alexandria Aces to the
championship last season.
Trinity, led by Head Coach Tim
Scannell, finished 19-22 last season, and was eliminated in the SCAC
Divisional Playoffs by Rhodes College. |
