At its annual spring meeting, the Board of Directors of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) passed legislation granting official conference sport status to men’s and women’s indoor track and field, bringing the league’s total sports sponsorship to 20 (10 each for men and women), with play beginning the 2002-03 academic season. In addition, the Board approved the introduction of a men’s and women’s post-season basketball tournament, also beginning with the 2002-03 season.
Men’s and women’s indoor track and field are the first new sports added to the conference’s lineup since softball was added in 1999. The first championship in men’s and women’s indoor track and field will be contested in the winter of 2003.
Beginning with the 2002-03 basketball season, the top eight men’s and women’s teams will play a single-elimination, post-season tournament to determine the league’s champion and automatic entry to the NCAA tournament. The conference regular season schedule will change from an 18-game double round-robin to a 14-game conference slate as designated by the Athletics Directors Council and the Basketball Coaches Council. The first two tournaments will be played in Memphis, Tenn., and hosted by Rhodes College.
