TRINITY UNIVERSITY RANKED NO. 11 IN SEARS DIRECTORS' CUP
San Antonio - Trinity University received a final ranking of No. 11 in the prestigious Division III Sears Cup standings - among 395 schools - presented by the nation's athletic directors.
Trinity - which finished the 1999-2000 season ranked 10th - amassed 463 points based on NCAA postseason competition. The Tigers moved up two notches from No. 13 in the final winter standings.
Trinity, led by Director of Athletics Bob King, picked up its latest points in softball and men's and women's tennis. Tiger softball advanced to the NCAA Division III regionals for the second consecutive year and earned 20 Sears Directors' Cup points. The women's tennis team was NCAA runner-up and was awarded 90 points. The Tiger men's tennis team made the regional final and scored 30 points.
Last March, the Tiger men's swimming and diving team finished 17th at the NCAA Championships and the women were 32nd. In the fall, the Tiger women's soccer team advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the first time. Trinity football played in the quarterfinals for the fourth straight year. Men's soccer made the regional final and women's volleyball advanced to the regional semifinals.
The final standings are based on updated results of baseball, women's and men's golf, women's and men's lacrosse, softball, women's and men's tennis and women's and men's track and field. Trinity competes in all of the previously mentioned sports except for lacrosse.
Williams College (Mass.) defended its title by winning its fifth Sears Directors' Cup in six years with 897.5 points. Middlebury College (Vt.) was runner-up with 728.5 points and the College of New Jersey was third with 713.5 points.
The Sears Directors' Cup is administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.
