TRINITY FINISHES NO. 10 IN SEARS DIRECTORS' CUP
SAN ANTONIO - Trinity University has closed out the 1999-2000 season ranked No. 10 in the Division III Sears Directors' Cup, presented by the nation's athletic directors. Trinity, led by Athletic Director Bob King, finished in the top 10 of the national standings for the second consecutive year.
Trinity - ranked No. 1 in the fall standings - accumulated 525 points based on NCAA postseason play. Last year, Trinity finished ninth with 300 points.
The Tiger men's and women's tennis teams won the NCAA Division III championships last month. It marked the first time a Division III institution won both championships the same year.
Trinity was NCAA runner-up in women's volleyball and the Tiger football team reached the semifinals for the second straight year. The men's and women's soccer teams both advanced to the quarterfinals. Trinity men's basketball also qualified for postseason play as did women's softball. Individual student-athletes competed in the NCAA championships in women's swimming and diving, men's cross country and men's track and field.
Williams (Mass.) College won the title for the fourth time in five years, with 849 points. California-San Diego was runner-up with 788.5 points and the College of New Jersey was third with 702.5. Wisconsin-Stevens Point came in at No. 8 with 548 points and Wisconsin-Eau Claire was ninth with 545.
Wisconsin-La Crosse was 11th with 508 points and Amherst (Mass.) was No. 12 with 501. The NCAA Division III is composed of some 400 institutions.
Trinity also had a stellar year in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), winning eight championships. For their achievements, the Tigers brought home the SCAC President's Trophy - a railroad bell - for the seventh consecutive year. Trinity won SCAC championships in volleyball, football, men's soccer, men's basketball, women's swimming and diving, softball and men's and women's tennis.
