| Pineville, Louisiana
- After a 14-inning one-run loss to open the NCAA West Region
Tournament yesterday, the Trinity softball team rebounded with a 1-0 win
over Hardin-Simmons University on Friday afternoon.
Trinity (26-11) out-hit Hardin-Simmons 6-2, scoring
the game's only run in the third inning. The Cowgirls were able to
get out of a bases-loaded jam in the inning to keep it a one-run game.
Erin Mulvey, who pitched all 14 innings in
yesterday's loss, was back out again today for the Tigers - and she was
even better today. Mulvey struck out 10 batters - including eight
in the first three innings - on her way to a two-hit shutout victory,
improving to 16-5 this season.
The 10 strikeouts not only gave Mulvey the school
record for a single playoff game, but also gave her 155 strikeouts this
season - breaking her own school record of 154, set in 2005.
Kate Wright and Katie Longacre both had two hits
for the Tigers, with Wright scoring the game's only run. Michelle
Gossein drove in the run with an infield single with the bases loaded.
Gossein and Jamie Williams were both 1-3 in the game.
With the win, Trinity advances to play either
Mississippi College or Chapman University later this evening in another
elimination game. Hardin-Simmons is eliminated from tournament
play. |
