Trinity Splits Final Doubleheader Against Austin College Sunday

San Antonio - The Trinity University Tigers and the Austin College Kangaroos softball teams wrapped up their regular seasons with a doubleheader split Sunday at the Tigers’ field.

Austin College won the opener 9-0, in a five-inning run-rule game. Trinity took the second half of the doubleheader 5-4, and won the season series 3-1. The Tigers captured Saturday’s games 5-4 and 9-7.

On Saturday, the Tigers also qualified for the SCAC Championship tournament, to be hosted by Trinity, next Friday through Sunday, April 26. Trinity (12-20, 10-6 SCAC) will take on the Millsaps College Majors (15-20, 7-7 SCAC) at 2 p.m. next Friday. Trinity is the No. 2 team in the SCAC West Division and Millsaps is third in the East. Six teams will compete in the double-elimination tournament, with the winner receiving the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The Kangaroos scored two runs each in the first and third innings of game one, and widened the lead with five runs in the fourth. Austin College scored nine runs, on eight hits, committed no errors and left five players on base. The Tigers scattered six hits, committed two errors and left six players on base. First-year right-hander Annie Clarke (1-7) pitched the first three innings and took the loss. Clare was relieved in the fourth inning by first-year right-handed pitcher Brittany Losey. Tiger junior third baseman Christina Carni batted 2-2 and first-year right fielder Karen MacPherson hit 2-3.

Trinity had a big five-run third inning in the second game. The inning was highlighted with a two-RBI double to center field by senior center fielder Kate Wright. Austin College closed the gap with three runs in the top of the fourth inning and one in the fifth. Losey, who went the distance on the mound, retired the Kangaroos in order in the sixth inning. The Kangaroos challenged in the top of the seventh, as the first baseman drew a walk, and the designated hitter reached first base on a fielder’s choice. But the Austin College pinch runner was thrown out at second base on a play from senior shortstop Jamie Williams to senior second baseman Lee Smith. The next Austin College batter flied out to MacPherson and right field. The final put was made on a ground out to Carni at third base.

Three seniors played in their final regular-season contest. Wright batted 1-3 with two RBIs, a double and scored one run. Smith hit 2-3 and Williams, Trinity’s all-time leader in hits, batted 1-2 with one walk and a run.

Losey (10-8) allowed four runs, six hits, three walks and fanned three batters. Austin College committed two errors and left eight players on base. Trinity scored five runs, collected seven hits, made three errors and left six players on base.
