Colorado - The Trinity
Tigers and Colorado College Tigers
split a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.
Trinity won the opening game 10-3 and
Colorado College took the second 7-4. The second-half of the
doubleheader was called after six innings because of darkness. The games
were moved to Doherty High School in Colorado Springs because of snow on
the field at Colorado College.
The two teams will conclude their
series with a doubleheader Sunday starting at noon Mountain Time (1 p.m.
Central). Trinity stands at 6-16 and 4-2 SCAC and Colorado College is
4-11 and 1-5 SCAC.
In the opening game, the Trinity
Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as first-year
right fielder Karen Macpherson scored on a wild pitch. Colorado College
tied the in the third inning, on an RBI ground-rule double by right
fielder Sandy Corliss. The Colorado Tigers increased the lead to 2-1 on
an RBI single in the fourth inning by third baseman Alie Ehrensaft.
Trinity evened the game at 2-all in the fifth inning on an RBI single by
senior second baseman Lee Smith, driving in sophomore first baseman
Alexa Calderon.
Then, Trinity opened the flood
gates, with six runs in the sixth inning, for an 8-2 lead. The Tigers
scored six runs on five hits and three errors by Colorado College. A
highlight was an RBI double by junior third baseman Christina Carni,
scoring senior designated hitter Kate Wright and senior shortstop Jamie
Williams. Carni scored on an RBI by Smith, who reached first base on an
error.
Colorado College scored one run in
the bottom of the sixth, but Trinity countered with two runs in the top
of the seventh. The runs came from Williams, who doubled through the
right side, scoring first-year left fielder Rachel Garrett and
MacPherson.
Wright batted 3-5 with one RBI and
scored one run. MacPherson, who tied a school record with three stolen
bases, hit 2-3 and scored three runs. Williams, Carni and Smith each
produced two RBIs. Garrett scored two runs and had two stolen bases.
First-year right-hander Brittany
Losey entered the game in the fourth inning, and pitched 3 2/3 innings.
Losey, who got the victory and improved to 4-6, allowed one earned run,
two hits, one walk and struck out one batter.
The second game began with a 1-1 tie
after the first inning. Williams doubled down the right field line in
the top half of the inning, scoring Garrett. Colorado College scored a
run in the second inning and Trinity quickly countered with a run of its
own in the top of the third. Carni cracked an RBI single, as Garrett
crossed the plate. Colorado College, though, had a five-run fourth
inning and led 7-2. The inning was marked by two home runs, including a
grand slam. Trinity put two runs on the board in fifth inning,
highlighted by a solo home run by Williams. It marked Williams’ first
home run of the season. Wright scored the second run as first-year
catcher Savannah Martinez reached the base on an error by the pitcher.
First-year right-hander Annie Clarke
was the starter and pitched 3 1/3 innings. Clarke took the loss and now
stands at 1-6.
Williams batted 2-4 with two RBIs, a
double and home run and scored one run. Garrett was 2-3 with two runs.
MacPherson also stole a base, increasing her total to four on the day.
