Trinity Sweeps Colorado College in SCAC Doubleheader

Colorado Springs, Colorado - The Tigers won three of four SCAC games over the weekend with the Colorado College Tigers, culminating with 14-1 (five innings, run rule) and 11-8 victories Sunday at Doherty High School.

Trinity improved to 8-16 and 6-2 SCAC, and is in second place in the conference West Division, two games behind Austin College. Colorado College now stands at 4-13 and 1-7 SCAC.

First-year right-hander Brittany Losey won both of Sunday’s games, and improved to 6-6. In the opener, Losey allowed one earned run, two hits, three walks and struck out one batter. Losey pitched the final three innings of the second game, giving up four earned runs, three hits, four walks and struck out one batter.

The Trinity Tigers put four runs on the scoreboard in the second inning of the opening game. Senior second baseman Lee Smith singled, as senior center fielder Kate Wright and sophomore first baseman Alexa Calderon crossed the plate. First-year right fielder Karen MacPherson tripled down the right field line, scoring first-year catcher Savannah Martinez and Smith.

Four more runs, in the top of the third, were the order of the day for the Trinity Tigers. Wright started it with a two RBI single, scoring Calderon and senior shortstop Jamie Williams. Sophomore designated hitter Teresa Greppi hit a SAC fly to right field, as Wright scored. MacPherson then singled, Martinez advanced to second base and junior third baseman Christina Carni produced the fourth run.

It seems that four was the number of choice for Trinity once again, this time in the fourth inning. Williams, the lead-off batter, swatted her second home run in as many days and for the season. Smith hit a SAC fly to right field, as Calderon scored. Wright then scored on an error by the catcher, followed by a run by Carni. Greppi had reached first base on a Colorado College shortstop error. Trinity led 12-0 at this point.

The Trinity Tigers scored two runs in the fifth and final inning. Wright cracked an RBI double, driving in Calderon and Williams. Colorado College gained its only run by a SAC fly in the bottom half of the inning.

Trinity scored eight earned runs, exploded for 16 hits, made one error and left eight players on base. Colorado College made six errors and stranded four players.

Williams batted 3-4 with one RBI, a double, a home run and scored three runs. Calderon went 3-3 with two doubles, a walk and four runs. Wright hit 3-4 with four RBIs, one double and three runs. Martinez was 3-3 with one run scored. MacPherson batted 2-5 with two RBIs, and a triple.

The second game of the day was tighter, as Colorado College led 2-1 after the first inning. Trinity took an early 1-0 lead as first-year left fielder Rachel Garrett scored MacPherson on an RBI single. Colorado College started off with two runs on four hits.

The number four popped up again, as the Tigers scored four runs in the top of the third inning to lead 5-2. Williams , who later scored on a wild pitch, first hit an RBI double and drove in Garrett. Then, Calderon hit her first home run of the season. Smith got on base on a fielder’s choice, scoring Wright.

Colorado College rallied with a run in the bottom of the third and closed to 3-5. Things got interesting in the fifth inning, as the Colorado Tigers scored two runs and tied the score at 5-5. Shortstop Alyssa Kallweit opened the inning with a solo home run.

The Texas-based Tigers, though, rose to the occasion and scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning, to lead 10-5. Two Trinity home runs were hit in this inning, starting with MacPherson’s solo shot, her first of the season. Calderon cracked a two RBI double, scoring Williams and Garrett. Then came Wright’s two-run homer, her first of the campaign, as she and Calderon crossed home plate.

Colorado College put up a run in the sixth inning, as Kallweit scored on a wild pitch.

Trinity’s final run of the game came in the seventh, as MacPherson scored on a single by Williams. Colorado College’s last at-bat resulted in two runs, on an RBI double and ground out to second base.

Wright batted 3-5 with two RBIs, a home run and two runs. Calderon was 2-5 with three RBIs, a home run and double, along with scoring two runs. MacPherson hit 3-5 with an RBI, a home run and three runs scored. Garrett went 3-4 with an RBI and two runs. Williams hit 3-5 with two RBIs, a double and two runs.

Career wise, Williams is ranked No. 2 in Trinity batting average (.378), is the leader in hits (178) and runs scored (123). She is No. 2 in RBIs (84) and leads in doubles (40). Wright is seventh in career batting average (.329) and fourth in hits (146). She is third in runs scored (104) and third in doubles (30).

Trinity scored 10 earned runs, registered 18 hits, made no errors and left nine on base. Colorado College scored eight earned runs, produced 10 hits, committed two errors and left six players on base.

The Trinity Tigers continue their SCAC schedule on Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11, in a four-game series with Southwestern University at Georgetown, Texas.
