Colorado - The
Tigers won three of four SCAC games
over the weekend with the Colorado College Tigers, culminating with 14-1
(five innings, run rule) and 11-8 victories Sunday at Doherty High
School. Trinity improved to
8-16 and 6-2 SCAC, and is in second place in the conference West
Division, two games behind Austin College. Colorado College now stands
at 4-13 and 1-7 SCAC.
First-year right-hander Brittany
Losey won both of Sunday’s games, and improved to 6-6. In the opener,
Losey allowed one earned run, two hits, three walks and struck out one
batter. Losey pitched the final three innings of the second game, giving
up four earned runs, three hits, four walks and struck out one batter.
The Trinity Tigers put four runs on
the scoreboard in the second inning of the opening game. Senior second
baseman Lee Smith singled, as senior center fielder Kate Wright and
sophomore first baseman Alexa Calderon crossed the plate. First-year
right fielder Karen MacPherson tripled down the right field line,
scoring first-year catcher Savannah Martinez and Smith.
Four more runs, in the top of the
third, were the order of the day for the Trinity Tigers. Wright started
it with a two RBI single, scoring Calderon and senior shortstop Jamie
Williams. Sophomore designated hitter Teresa Greppi hit a SAC fly to
right field, as Wright scored. MacPherson then singled, Martinez
advanced to second base and junior third baseman Christina Carni
produced the fourth run.
It seems that four was the number of
choice for Trinity once again, this time in the fourth inning. Williams,
the lead-off batter, swatted her second home run in as many days and for
the season. Smith hit a SAC fly to right field, as Calderon scored.
Wright then scored on an error by the catcher, followed by a run by
Carni. Greppi had reached first base on a Colorado College shortstop
error. Trinity led 12-0 at this point.
The Trinity Tigers scored two runs
in the fifth and final inning. Wright cracked an RBI double, driving in
Calderon and Williams. Colorado College gained its only run by a SAC fly
in the bottom half of the inning.
Trinity scored eight earned runs,
exploded for 16 hits, made one error and left eight players on base.
Colorado College made six errors and stranded four players.
Williams batted 3-4 with one RBI, a
double, a home run and scored three runs. Calderon went 3-3 with two
doubles, a walk and four runs. Wright hit 3-4 with four RBIs, one double
and three runs. Martinez was 3-3 with one run scored. MacPherson batted
2-5 with two RBIs, and a triple.
The second game of the day was
tighter, as Colorado College led 2-1 after the first inning. Trinity
took an early 1-0 lead as first-year left fielder Rachel Garrett scored
MacPherson on an RBI single. Colorado College started off with two runs
on four hits.
The number four popped up again, as
the Tigers scored four runs in the top of the third inning to lead 5-2.
Williams , who later scored on a wild pitch, first hit an RBI double and
drove in Garrett. Then, Calderon hit her first home run of the season.
Smith got on base on a fielder’s choice, scoring Wright.
Colorado College rallied with a run
in the bottom of the third and closed to 3-5. Things got interesting in
the fifth inning, as the Colorado Tigers scored two runs and tied the
score at 5-5. Shortstop Alyssa Kallweit opened the inning with a solo
home run.
The Texas-based Tigers, though, rose
to the occasion and scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning, to
lead 10-5. Two Trinity home runs were hit in this inning, starting with
MacPherson’s solo shot, her first of the season. Calderon cracked a two
RBI double, scoring Williams and Garrett. Then came Wright’s two-run
homer, her first of the campaign, as she and Calderon crossed home
plate.
Colorado College put up a run in the
sixth inning, as Kallweit scored on a wild pitch.
Trinity’s final run of the game came
in the seventh, as MacPherson scored on a single by Williams. Colorado
College’s last at-bat resulted in two runs, on an RBI double and ground
out to second base.
Wright batted 3-5 with two RBIs, a
home run and two runs. Calderon was 2-5 with three RBIs, a home run and
double, along with scoring two runs. MacPherson hit 3-5 with an RBI, a
home run and three runs scored. Garrett went 3-4 with an RBI and two
runs. Williams hit 3-5 with two RBIs, a double and two runs.
Career wise, Williams is ranked No.
2 in Trinity batting average (.378), is the leader in hits (178) and
runs scored (123). She is No. 2 in RBIs (84) and leads in doubles (40).
Wright is seventh in career batting average (.329) and fourth in hits
(146). She is third in runs scored (104) and third in doubles (30).
Trinity scored 10 earned runs,
registered 18 hits, made no errors and left nine on base. Colorado
College scored eight earned runs, produced 10 hits, committed two errors
and left six players on base.
The Trinity Tigers continue their
SCAC schedule on Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11, in a
four-game series with Southwestern University at Georgetown, Texas. |
