- Trinity's softball team was swept by
Concordia (TX) University in a season-opening doubleheader on Saturday
afternoon. Trinity (0-2) lost the opener
8-6, then fell 5-1 in the second game. The Tigers hammered out 21
hits overall, but committed seven total errors and left 21 players on
base.
In the opening game, Concordia broke open a
scoreless tie with a four-run third inning - highlighted by Carri
Goree's three-run homer. The Tigers answered quickly, though,
scoring three quick runs to keep the game close.
Concordia added two more runs in the fourth,
though, pushing the lead back to three. Trinity came back once
again, scoring three runs to tie the game heading into the fifth inning.
Concordia got a sacrifice fly in the fifth to
reclaim the lead, which turned out to be all the visitors needed as
Trinity was unable to score again. The Tigers left five runners on
in the final two innings.
Kate Wright (0-1) took the loss, giving up one
earned run - two runs overall - in the final three innings, but allowing
seven walks. The Tiger defense also committed five errors in the
opening game.
Jamie Williams was 5-5 with two runs and two RBI
in the game, tying Trinity's school record for hits in one game.
Rachel Hanson had five hits against Schreiner in 2003.
First-year Rachel Garrett was 2-2 with one RBI in
the game, drawing a pair of walks. Fellow first-year Karen
MacPherson was 2-5 with two runs scored as the Tiger leadoff hitter.
In the second game, Concordia's offense picked up
right where it left off, opening the game with a five-run first inning.
The Tigers, despite out-hitting Concordia 8-6, managed just one run in
the third inning.
Garrett was 2-3 in the second game, while Wright
scored Trinity's only run of the game. Six other players had one
hit each for the Tigers.
Brittany Losey (0-1) took the loss for Trinity,
giving up just three earned runs and going the distance. She
walked seven and struck out a pair of hitters in her collegiate debut.
The Tigers play again at home next Saturday,
February 14, taking on Schreiner University in a doubleheader that
starts at 1:00 p.m. |
