- Trinity's softball team broke a
five-game losing streak to start the season, splitting a Saturday
afternoon doubleheader at home against Concordia (TX) University.
Trinity (1-5) opened the day with a 13-4 loss to
Concordia, then rallied for a 5-3 win in the finale. Concordia
swept Trinity in a Saturday doubleheader to open the season on February
7.
The Tigers actually took the lead in game one with
a run in the bottom of the first, but Concordia scored three unearned
runs to take the lead in the third.
In the sixth, Concordia blew the game open with a
10-run inning that threatened to shorten the game with a run-rule.
Trinity answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it was
not enough to keep the game alive.
Annie Clarke (0-2) took the loss for Trinity,
giving up nine runs on eight hits through 5.2 innings, but none of her
nine runs allowed were earned.
Caitlin Richards was 1-1 with two walks in the
game, while Alexa Calderon was 1-2 with a run scored. The Tiger
offense mustered just five hits in the opening game.
In game two, the Tigers didn't settle for just one
first-inning run, but instead scored three runs on four hits to take the
early advantage. After Concordia tied the game with three runs of
its own in the fourth, though, it looked like Trinity might let this one
slip away.
Instead, the Tigers hammered three hits in the
bottom of the sixth inning to plate a pair of crucial runs and take the
lead for good.
Brittany Losey (1-2) allowed just one hit over the
final three innings to hold off Concordia. She gave up three runs
- only two earned - on four hits in the complete-game victory - her
first collegiate win.
Lee Smith and Christina Carni both went 2-3 in the
game, while Rachel Garrett had two hits in four at-bats for the Tigers.
Jamie Williams was 1-2 with one run and one RBI, and also reached base
twice on walks.
Carni, Williams, and Karen MacPherson all had hits
in both games, and the three Tiger players are all on six-game hitting
streaks to start the season.
Trinity will travel to Texas Lutheran University
on Wednesday afternoon to play in its first road games of the year.
The Tigers will not return home until March 5 for a doubleheader against
Evangel University. |
