- The Tigers
and Hendrix College Warriors split a
SCAC doubleheader Sunday, in two, five-inning run-rule games.
Hendrix won the opener 19-4 and Trinity
took the second game 11-2. The Tigers (5-15, 3-1 SCAC) captured both of
Saturday’s games. The Warriors have a record of 8-11 and 1-3 SCAC.
Tiger senior shortstop Jamie
Williams broke Trinity’s school record in career hits. Williams hit 4-5
on the day, and now has 168 career hits. In the opener, Williams batted
1-2 with one run, and in the second game she hit 3-3 and scored a run.
Williams also cracked a double. The Trinity record for hits was
previously held by Ali Woods, who played for the Tigers from 1999 to
2002.
First-year right fielder Karen
MacPherson increased her stolen base mark to 22, with one steal coming
in the first game and three in the second-half of the doubleheader.
MacPherson earlier broke the Tigers single-season record for steals. The
previous mark was 11 steals, set in 2003, and tied by senior center
fielder Kate Wright in 2008. First-year left fielder Rachel Garrett
stole a base in the first game and upped her total to 13 on the season.
Sunday’s opening game was tight in
the first inning, as Hendrix took a 2-0 lead. Trinity scored a run as
junior third baseman Christina Carni drove in Williams with a single.
Carni hit 1-3 with one RBI. The Warriors produced six runs in the top of
the second inning, highlighted by a solo home run by catcher Christina
Byler.
Trinity closed to 3-8 with two runs
in the bottom half of the inning. A series of events in the inning led
to the scoring, as Garrett singled and sophomore designated hitter
Teresa Greppi advanced to third base. Garret then stole second base,
Williams reached on a fielding error and advanced to second. Garrett and
Greppi then scored for the Tigers. Garrett batted 13 with one RBI and
one scored one run.
Hendrix added three runs in the
fourth inning and two in the fifth. The Tigers picked up one more run,
in the fourth inning, as Garrett grounded out and MacPherson scored from
third base.
Warriors left fielder Trace Grinnell
hit 3-4 with seven RBIs, a triple and three runs.
Hendrix scored 14 earned runs, put
up 15 hits, made two errors and left six players on base. Trinity scored
two earned runs, scattered five hits, committed five errors and stranded
seven players.
The second game was an all Trinity
affair, as the Tigers scored six runs, on six hits, in the bottom of the
first inning. Four of the RBIs came from Carni and senior second baseman
Lee Smith. The Tigers produced two runs in the second inning, both from
a Smith single through the right side. Carni and sophomore first baseman
Alexa Calderon crossed the plate. In the third, Garrett grounded out for
an RBI, scoring MacPherson.
The Tigers added top to the lead
with two runs in the fourth inning, with an RBI single by Smith (scoring
Wright), who then scored on an error. Smith batted 3-3 with five RBIs
and scored two runs. Wright went 2-2 with a double and two runs.
First-year right-hander Brittany Losey (3-6) went the five innings,
allowing five hits, one earned run and two walks.
Hendrix, which committed one error
and left seven players on base, could manage only one run each in the
second and fourth innings.
Trinity scored 10 earned runs,
cracked 14 hits, made two errors and left five players on base.
The Tigers continue their SCAC
campaign Saturday and Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo., in a four-game
series with Colorado College. |
