- The Tigers lost both games of
their SCAC doubleheader at Southwestern University on Saturday
afternoon. Southwestern
edged Trinity 10-9 in the opener, and
won the second, six-inning run-rule game 9-1. The two teams split a
doubleheader Friday and the Pirates won the series 3-1.
The Tigers are in second place in
the SCAC West Division with a 7-5 record (9-19 overall). Southwestern
took over first place with a 9-3 SCAC mark (18-14 overall). Hendrix
(18-15, 9-7 SCAC) is in third place and Austin College is fourth (11-21,
6-6 SCAC). Trinity concludes its regular-season home schedule next
Saturday and Sunday, April 19, in doubleheaders with Austin College.
Saturday’s games begin at 1 p.m. and the April 19 doubleheader starts at
noon.
Trinity will host the six-team,
double-elimination SCAC Championship tournament April 24-26. Three teams
from each division qualify for the event.
Saturday’s opening game was tied at
1-1 after two innings. Tiger senior second baseman Lee Smith singled to
center field in the second inning and drove in senior center fielder
Kate Wright. Trinity put up two runs in the top of the third, for a 3-1
lead. Senior shortstop Jamie Williams swinged through the left side and
scored first-year right fielder Karen MacPherson. First-year left
fielder Rachel Garrett, who had reached first base on an error, also
scored an unearned run.
Southwestern took a 6-3 lead with
five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. But Trinity re-took the
lead, 8-6, with five Tiger runs in the top of the fifth. MacPherson
scored on an error and Garrett crossed the plate on an RBI by Williams.
Junior third baseman Christina Carni singled to center field, scoring
Wright and Williams. Smith tripled down the left field line, driving in
Carni.
The Pirates closed the gap with one
run in the bottom of the fifth. The Tigers answered in the sixth inning
on a Williams’ double, scoring MacPherson. Trinity’s win was not in the
cards, though, as the Pirates scored three runs in the sixth.
Wright batted 2-4 with two runs, and
chalked up her 150th career hit, third on the all-time Trinity list.
Williams, the career leader in hits, went 2-4 with three RBIs and one
run. She increased her career total to 183. MacPherson batted 2-4 and
scored three runs, while stealing a base.
First-year right-hander Brittany
Losey (7-8) pitched 5 1/3 innings and took the loss. The Tigers
had 10 hits, made three errors and left four players on base. The
Pirates produced eight hits, committed six errors and stranded six
players.
The second game was all
Southwestern, as the Pirates took a 7-1 lead. Southwestern scored two
runs in each of the first two innings and three in fourth. The Tigers’
lone run came in the top of the sixth, as sophomore first baseman Alexa
Calderon singled, scoring MacPherson. The Pirates closed out the game
with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
MacPherson hit 2-3 with one run and
a triple. Calderon batted 1-3 with an RBI. Junior right-hander
Helen Thompson (1-2) was the starter and was charged with the loss.
Trinity had four hits, made four
errors and left four players on base. Southwestern racked up 10 hits,
made one error and left five players on base. |
