Robert V. Blystone, Ph.D.

Professor

Getting to Know Robert V. Blystone...

I joined the Biology faculty in January 1971 and over the years have explored a variety of professional opportunities. My interests have found extramural funding from a number of sources including the following: National Science Foundation, U.S. Air Force Office for Scientific Research, U.S. Department of Education, and Apple Computer. I have consulted for a number of publishers over the years.

For the last ten years I have been studying how rodents respond to the application of 35 and 94 GHz RF energy into their bodies. These frequencies with appropriate power produce a considerable heat load in the animals. My students and I have been exploring interesting research questions involving how RF generated heat moves through the skin and how anesthesia overlays a hypothermic response.

I have been associated with a number of professional organizations and served on a variety of boards, study panels, and committees. I was elected into fellowship of the AAAS and Sigma Xi scientific societies. I have also served on many University committees and was elected three times to the Faculty Senate.

Above all, I enjoy teaching. For me the greatest intellectual pursuit is the organization of information so that my students and I can make contextual sense of some of this knowledge. These efforts have been recognized with the Z.T. Scott Award and a Piper Professorship.

My wife and I met while in grade school in El Paso, Texas. We were married in 1964 and have one very grown son who is in the radio broadcasting business. We have two grandchildren and spend as much time with them as we can. When time permits I enjoy writing about various subjects.

What he teaches...

I participate in the Integrative Biology course program (Biology 1311, 1111, 1312, 1112). My upper division teaching efforts include Microanatomy and Developmental Biology. I participate in the First-Year Seminar program and teach a non-majors course dealing with the biology of pharmaceuticals. And during this decade, I have been associated with 15 wonderful undergraduate research students.
