Master of Science in Accounting

Class of 2009

Trinity University 's Master of Science in Accounting degree program was launched in fall 1997 to enable students to meet the new requirements that Texas and most other states have adopted in regard to preparation for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination. The graduate program in Accounting is structured to develop and perfect the technical, theoretical, and interpersonal skills required of accounting professionals. Upon completion of the program, the student is awarded the degree of Master of Science in Accounting and will have completed all of the courses required to take the national CPA exam.

The graduate program stresses the development of communication and analytical skills and incorporates projects and computer simulations based on actual events occurring in the world of business today. Close interaction between students and professors is emphasized in all courses. Students, as well, get to know each other as they work on various small group projects.

The primary benefit of the Master of Science in Accounting Program is that the increased education better prepares students for a lifetime of professional development rather than just an entry-level position. When those in the accounting profession developed the requirement for a fifth year of accounting, they also saw it as a way to provide sufficient time for students to acquire a well-rounded undergraduate education and to develop good written and oral communication skills.

The liberal arts background that Trinity provides has always produced well-rounded students and has contributed to the desirability of its accounting graduates in the eyes of the four international accounting firms (known as the Big-Four) and other firms that recruit Trinity's accounting majors each year. Now that Trinity's accounting majors have five years instead of four to cover the relevant areas in Business Administration and Accounting, this allows them more time to expand their undergraduate education by earning a concentration in more than one area of Business Administration or by adding a second major or a minor in an area outside of Business.

Please refer to the Master of Science in Accounting brochure for degree plans and course descriptions. For additional information on the program, please contact Dr. Linda B. Specht, Director of the Accounting Program, at (210) 999-7348 or lspecht@trinity.edu.
