The goal of the internship program is to provide an
effective way for students to get actual experience in accounting before
beginning the Master of Science in Accounting program the following
fall. Most interns receive the same training from their employers as
do beginning accountants, which in itself is a valuable experience, and
they usually receive the same salary as beginning accountants. At the
end of the internship period, most of the students receive offers for
permanent employment to take effect after the student has completed the
M.S. in Accounting program. To our knowledge, Trinity is the only
small university in Texas with a structured internship program of this type
in which almost all accounting majors participate.

Structure:
In the spring of their senior year, most of the accounting
majors at TrinityUniversity participate in the
internship program that is available to accounting majors. Students
serving an internship work from the first week in January until Spring
Break, are well paid by the company by whom they are employed, and receive
college credit. After Spring Break these students return to campus
and begin a mini-semester in which they take the last two courses they need
in order to graduate in May.
Sample Comments from Students
on Their Internships:
"I served an internship with a public accounting
firm, and I got the opportunity to travel and received exposure
to different industries. Furthermore, I was treated like a team
member with my equal share of responsibility. I had ample
opportunities to exercise my knowledge in the work assigned to me."
"Being able to write well was noted as a big
plus. Moreover, people skills were far more important than technical
skills."
"The best educational experience I have ever had in
such a compact time."
"It was great--I wouldn't change a thing."
"It gives you an insight into what the business world
is like."
Representative Firms and
Organizations Employing Accounting Interns:
Accounting majors serve accounting internships with the
four large international accounting firms (known as the Big-Four) in San
Antonio, Houston, or Dallas, as well as with local firms such as SBC
Communications, Inc. in San Antonio.
