Trinity University NMR Site
NMR spectroscopy is one of the most important analytical tools
available to the modern chemist, however, the high initial cost of a
modern NMR
spectrometer and the cost of maintenance and cryogens prevent many two-
and four year colleges from using NMR spectroscopy on compounds
prepared
by their students. With funding from the National Science Foundation,
the
Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, and Trinity University, the
Department
of Chemistry at Trinity University students in the San Antonio area
will
have easy and effective access to a 300 MHz NMR spectrometer for
analysis
of compounds they have synthesized in experiments at their home
institutions.
The data will be obtained on the spectrometer which is housed at and
maintained
by Trinity University and will be made available via the web to
students
at their home institutions. Using free software from Italy, the data
will
be processed and analyzed by students who don't have to leave their
home
institution, or even their home.
Useful links
- Handout
on Processing NMR spectra
- Downloaded programs. Many of the institutions have licensed
copies of Mestrec installed on laboratory computers. In the recent
past, an older, unsupported version of Mestrec could be downloaded for
free. I have created a link to that program on this website. I don't
know whether it will work as a copy or whether it needs to be
installed. There is no free program for Mac user. The developers of
Mestrec have created a new program, Mnova, which contains a version for
the Mac which is available at http://www.mestrec.com/ . There is also a
company that has created an NMR program for the Mac, which can be found
at http://www.inmr.net/. I haven't tried either program because I don't
have a Mac.
