When Faculty Are Too Accommodating

Frequently Asked Faculty Questions

Are you a faculty member or instructor new to issues of disability? Find out how to work with DSS, what to do when a student hands you an accommodation letter, useful definitions, roles and responsibilities, and more, in our Frequently Asked Faculty Questions.

Sample Syllabus Statement

A syllabus statement is an effective method to inform students with disabilities of the services available to them. You may use the below sample statement, or, if you prefer, you are welcome to develop your own statement. It should inform your students that accommodations are available for students with disabilities, you are willing to provide those accommodations, and they will need to be registered with DSS to begin the formal process if they have not already done so. Be sure it is clear, preferably in writing or when they contact you, that they should register with DSS as well as speak to you personally in order to use academic or testing accommodations. This interaction and communication is for your protection as well as the protection of the student and the University.

If you have a documented disability and will need accommodations in this class, please speak with me privately early in the semester so I may be prepared to meet your needs. If you have not already registered with Disability Services for Students, contact the office at 999-7411 or dss@trinity.edu. You must be registered with DSS before I can provide accommodations.

Advising Students with Disabilities

If you are an adviser of a student with a disability, there are two documents which may assist you as you inform the student of his/her academic requirements and make recommendations.

Advising Students with Disabilities at Trinity University is a document created for faculty which address issues such as course load, the time of day the class is taken, and modifications to academic requirements.

College 101: Students with Disabilities Advising and Course Selection is a document created for students with disabilities which informs them of issues they should consider when interacting with you during advisement.
