Accommodations
Once
an eligible student has provided appropriate documentation, the student and
the DSS Coordinator work together to determine what accommodation(s) will
create an equal opportunity for access in the classroom and campus life
overall. Accommodations include, but are not limited to:
- Extended time
for exams and quizzes
- Testing in a
distraction-reduced environment
- Notetaking
assistance
- Audio books
- Materials in
electronic format
- Materials in
enlarged print
- Readers and
scribes for exams and quizzes
- Permission to audio-record
lectures
- Closed-circuit
television
- Zoomtext
(computer magnification software)
- Read and Write
Gold (writing assistance software and text-to-speech software)
- Recordings for
the Blind and Dyslexic players
- FM listening
devices
- Sign language interpreters
- Specialized
housing requests
Students
whose accommodations require advance time to arrange, (e.g., scheduling
American Sign Language interpreters or producing texts in an alternate
format) should notify DSS of these needs as soon as they register for the
relevant course. While applications for DSS will be accepted at any point in
the academic calendar, some time may be needed to verify the disability or to
arrange accommodations.
Accommodation Letters
Disability
Services for Students creates letters for students receiving academic
accommodations. These letters confirm the student has registered with DSS, is
qualified to receive academic accommodations and states the approved
accommodation(s) the student is eligible to receive. Students are strongly
encouraged to request their accommodation letters at the beginning of each
semester. Once students have requested and received their accommodation
letters, they should meet with each of their professors during their
professors’ office hours to present them with the letter and discuss their
accommodations and disability needs. Students do not need to notify their
professors of their disabilities if they are not requesting accommodations
for that faculty member’s course.
Scholarship Opportunities
Students with disabilities are
eligible for a wide variety of scholarship opportunities. Please
browse through the list provided to see them.
Temporary
Impairments
Students
with temporary impairments (e.g., broken arm or sprained ankle) can contact
the DSS Coordinator with any questions or concerns. Depending on the nature
of the impairment, the student may be able to receive some form of
assistance. Possible supportive services include:
- volunteer
notetakers
- extensions on
tests or paper deadlines
- temporary
accessible parking permits
- permission to
use a golf cart on campus (rented by the student)
To
learn more about renting a golf cart for campus usage, please contact DSS and
read the Temporary Mobility Impairment Procedures.
For absences due to illness, The University Student Handbook says that the
student is responsible for notifying the faculty member if s/he misses class
due to illness, preferably before the missed class. Health
Services
does not provide excuses for missed classes. If an illness
causes a student to miss several days of classes or be hospitalized and Health Services
has direct knowledge of this illness, staff may provide verification upon
request by the student.
