John Martin's passion for history began at an early age. He grew up on St. Simons Island, Georgia, across the street from the monument to the Battle of Bloody Marsh, and his father was the rector of a parish founded by John and Charles Wesley. His passion has led to great success. His first book, published soon after he earned his Ph.D. from Harvard, won the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize for the best first book on European history. Since then, he's published widely and won fellowships from the Danforth and Guggenheim foundations, the Fulbright Program, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He's currently working on two books, a new history of early modern Europe, and Sincerity's History, an exploration of a fundamental question in the history of ethics that has continued relevance today.
