Dream. Inspire. Achieve. The Campaign for Trinity University reaches $183.3 million

Trinity Alumni have contributed 20 percent to the campaign.

Dream. Inspire. Achieve. The Campaign for Trinity University has reached $183.3 million in gifts and pledges, 20 percent of these gifts are from Trinity alumni.  The campaign has now reached 92 percent of its $200 million goal.

Among the gifts given by alumni is a gift from the estate of Dorothy Everheart Kohler.  Mrs. Kohler ’40 attended Trinity at the Waxahachie campus.  Her father, brother, and sister were also Trinity alumni and she was a cousin of Raymond Judd, Trinity chaplain emeritus and a Trinity alumnus as well.

The $87, 000 Kohler gift will be used for the Mexico, the Americas, and Spain (MAS) program, one of the academic initiatives created and supported by the Campaign for Trinity.  The gift will support need-based scholarships for senior seminar projects in Morelia, Mexico; need-based scholarships for study abroad during the academic year and the summer and; a summer internship with faculty members in Spain.

Members of the Spurs sorority prepare for a rush party to be held in the Lightner Tea Room. The Tea Room and the rest of the Lightner Residence Hall underwent a "green" renovation funded in part by the Lightner Sams Foundation.

A $100,000 campaign gift from the Lightner Sams Foundation contributed to the “green” renovation of the Lightner Residence Hall and the Lightner Tea Room, at the top of the high rise.  The renovation used environmentally sustainable materials such as carpeting made from recycled products, which can be easily recycled later.  The renovation also made the building more energy efficient and improved the safety of the hall by upgrading the fire alarm, the sprinkler, and the heating/cooling systems.  The renovation of the Lightner Residence Hall was the first green remodeling project for Trinity and is the start of the University’s effort to apply for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

The American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation has contributed a gift of $10,000 to the newly created Stone Oak Outdoor Science Laboratory, which will provide K-8 students educational opportunities to study geosciences. The Laboratory, located in San Antonio’s newly established Stone Oak Park, is a collaboration between Trinity’s department of education and several San Antonio school districts.  It continues the work started by the late Edward C. (Ed) Roy, the Pyron Distinguished Professor of Geosciences and science specialist in the education department, who began the project.

The 250-acre Stone Oak Park is uniquely situated at the intersection of four eco-regions: the Edwards Plateau, the South Texas Plains, the Cross Timbers and Prairies, and Post Oak Savannah.  The area includes diverse plants, animals, rocks, soils, dinosaur tracks.  The Park is located close to Canyon Ridge Elementary School and Barbara Bush Middle School.

The Stone Oak Outdoor Science Laboratory carries on the legacy of Professor Roy who so inspired his students that many went on to pursue careers in the field.  Professor Roy was equally passionate about introducing students in elementary and middle school to the study of geosciences.

The Campaign for Trinity University, with the goal of raising $200 million, was launched on Sept. 22, 2005, and is the most ambitious and important advancement initiative in the history of the University.  The campaign has created over 60 new endowments; three-quarters of these new endowments will provide scholarships for future Trinity students.  The remaining endowments will be for new professorships, Trinity’s women’s studies program, and academic initiatives such as the East Asian Studies at Trinity (EAST) program. Campaign gifts are also financing enhancements to Trinity’s technology infrastructure, laboratories, athletic and recreation programs and facilities, and residence halls.
